This glossary is designed to help new traders learn definitions. These definitions are of frequently used words in spread betting. Scrolling through the list, one can familiarise oneself with words.
Bet
Also called a stake or wager. It is how much you are willing to risk for each trade.
Bid price
The buying price on a spread bet.
Bookmaker
A bookmaker makes the spreads for spread betting.
Buy
A trader buys on a spread when the prediction is that prices will increase.
Demonstration account
An account which allows you to place spread bets with computerised money to simulate the experience of spread betting.
Expiry date
The date which a spread bet ends unless a trader closes it early.
Gearing
Leveraging. Using borrowed money to make a bet.
Long position
A trader buys or bets on the high number of a spread because it is predicted to increase in value.
Markets
The different things one can find spreads for and thus bet on. Examples of different markets include bonds, stocks, sports, and currencies.
Offer price
The higher number on a spread. This is the amount a trader can purchase the stock for.
Order
An order is a trader's bet only under certain requirements. Until these requirements are met the order will not be placed.
Point
Each time the market price moves, it moves a point or a fraction of a point.
Portfolio
A trader's notebook which contains the trading markets, previous bets, available capital to trade, and the plan for spread betting.
Sell
A trader sells when a bet is placed on the lower end of the spread. This means the trader believes the value will decrease.
Short Position
A trader sells on a spread bet because the prediction is that market price will decrease.
Spread
A range of two numbers which is a bookmaker's prediction on the future price of that stock.
Stake
The amount of money a trader is betting for each point.
Stop loss
A limit traders may place on a bet. This means when the market hits a certain level and the trader has lost x amount of money, the bet should be automatically closed.
Trader
Someone who bets on spreads in spread betting.
