Financial spread betting
Financial spread betting is a way of trading on the world’s financial markets in a tax-efficient manner. There are many different spread betting companies around today all of which offer wide variety of global markets for the trader to place spread bets on, including stock indexes, commodities, currencies and equities.
Over recent years financial spread betting has become increasingly popular, especially amongst UK residents due to the tax advantages. This has resulted in many spread betting companies being formed to compete for market share.
Financial spread bet
A financial spread bet is a directional bet placed on any financial market. Bets can be placed long or short, enabling the trader to profit from rising or falling markets if he is correct with the direction of his bet. If the market moves in the direction of the bet the trader profits by the amount of points that the market moves in his favour, multiplied by the initial stake. Similarly, if the trader is wrong he stands to lose by the amount of points that a market moves against him from his entry to his exit price, multiplied by his initial stake size.
Financial spread bets are generally placed in Pounds per point, or fractions thereof. Many firms offer spread bets from as little as 50p per point which makes financial spread betting accessible to many more people than traditional trading, which requires considerably more margin and capital.
Financial spread betting is very similar to financial trading but there are a few differences. For UK residents, spread betting profits are free of capital gains tax and stamp duty. There are numerous other advantages, including the ability to place smaller bets than would be required in actual financial trading. Additionally, ownership of the financial instrument is not required.
As with actual trading, all the tools that the trader needs are available so that traders can place bets on any number of markets and can use all the traditional tools, such as market orders, stops losses and limit orders.
